Spring has sprung! It's time to shed the winter blues and embrace the fresh start that comes with the warmer weather. And what better way to do that than with a thorough spring cleaning?
But with so many cleaning tasks on the to-do list, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. That's why I've compiled this list of the top 5 spring cleaning tips, including the ones you should never avoid.
Also, don’t make yourself overwhelmed with doing it all at once, starting early like this will give you time to do one step each week if that’s all you have time for.
We often focus on the most visible areas, but don't forget those often-neglected spots. You know, the stuff above your eye level or below the knee. …and remember, it makes life a whole lot easier if you start from the top and work your way down to the bottom. So start with washing/dusting the light fixtures, ceiling fans, light switch plates, electrical outlets, door knobs and frames. Don’t forget to get the cobwebs in the corners and where the walls meet the ceiling. Quick Tip - I use a dry mop to swipe those down with no problem. If you don’t have a dry mop, just tossing a cleaning rag over your broom or using a clean floor Swiffer works too.
Next, let the sunshine in!! Wash your windows inside and out to allow more natural light in to brighten up your home. Start with brushing the screens and vacuuming the tracks, then use a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth for streak-free results. For hard-to-reach windows, consider a squeegee with a long pole extension or a step ladder, being sure to follow all safety directions carefully.
After gaining your bright perspective, next on the agenda is the appliances. Let’s get started with cleaning out the refrigerator. This will help prevent food spoilage and help you stay organized. Start with removing all items from the fridge and wipe down all shelves and drawers with a disinfectant. Be sure to toss any expired food and condiments, make sure to double check the dates. This is also a good time to clean behind, under and around all the other appliances as well. Pull them out, wipe them down and hit the walls and floors around them as well.
Now that the kitchen is smelling like the fresh air outside, let's tackle the closets. It’s time for decluttering and organizing EVERYTHING in the closets, dresser drawers, cabinets and on the shelves. A cluttered home can feel overwhelming and stressful. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to declutter and organize every room in your house. Just make sure to start small, choose one room at a time and go through each item, deciding whether to keep, donate, or discard. My quick little tip, if you haven’t used it in over 2 years, get rid of it to free up space. Nobody needs anything that has been sitting in a closet for 10 years.
After you’ve gotten all those corners, nooks and crannies all cleaned out, the final step is doing some deep cleaning on your carpet or rugs. Winter brings in a lot of dirt, dust, and allergens. Carpets and rugs act as traps for these unwanted guests. Rent a professional carpet cleaner or use a high-quality home steam cleaner. Don't forget to vacuum thoroughly before and after cleaning. And empty that dirty water often.
Bonus Tip: Put on some upbeat music and make it a fun family activity!
By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your spring cleaning is thorough and effective. A clean and organized home will not only feel more spacious and inviting, but it will also contribute to a healthier living environment.
